A top of the table clash in the SSFL League 4 saw Vale come away 1-0 winners in a scrappy game of few chances.

Vale County starting XI

The starting line up saw A. Cheshire in goal for his debut, with Woodbridge, Beck, Strang and Beer sitting in front once again. The centre of midfield saw Given and Slater start together with Foley, Young and Moran in behind Clements as the spine of the team remained similar to last week’s match against Tooting Celtic.

DB6 on net duties

Following an early spell of messy play from both teams as well as a dog (Clapham Common groundsman, up your game), Kew applied much of the early pressure without creating any clear chances. Referee Ronnie Robinson then gave a free kick to Vale just inside their own half, which Moran duly took. After the initial ball was cleared, Strang used his lanky frame to rise above a Kew defender on the edge of the box - knocking the ball into Given - who took a touch ‘round’ a defender before throwing himself to the ground as contact was made. 7/10 from the judges, a good effort. Moran grabbed the ball as soon as the penalty was awarded, which concerned some members of the team. Why, I hear you ask, why? If you were lucky enough to have been in attendance for the 2013/14 Christopher Moore cup final, you would understand (and if you weren’t, where were you?). However, the demons of that fateful day were banished with an excellent penalty into the left side netting (1-0). Following the goal, the game remained scrappy, with no real chances to speak of for the rest of the half - although Kew had a spell of pressure that was well defended by Vale. Foley took a hit to the crown jewels, and was subbed off for Wiggy just prior to the break - with questions about his ability to father children now being asked more than ever.

Moran dispatches his penalty after Given is brought down

Peattie replaced Clements in a straight swap at halftime, as Vale started the second 45 quickly. Moran was unable to get clean contact on a ball from Woodbridge, whilst Wiggy and Peattie were linking up well through the middle. Following initial pressure from Vale though, Kew grew back into the half, having much of the ball whilst finding the Vale rear guard tough to break down. A Kew defender did, however, a free header inside the 6 yard box from a corner, but was unable to get over the ball and instead looped it over the bar. As the half wore on, the Kew manager / groupie was voicing his opinion on the game ever more. Ronnie Robinson, being the legend that he quite clearly is, told him to go and walk his dog - which promptly shut the little fella up. Shortly after, there was some prime shithousery from A. Cheshire on his debut, in waiting for a Kew player to come to him before picking up the ball - a fine way to endear himself to the Vale faithful.

Peattie, Young, Wiggy and Moran caused problems for Kew on the times Vale could counter, with Peattie firing over from close range - almost guaranteeing himself the Dick of the Day vote in the process. The last 20 minutes of the game became ever scrappier, but County continued to defend well in the face of Kew pressure - with Given, Slater, Strang and Beck (who turned up fresh from a lucky lady’s) in the middle of the park battling well. After clearing a Kew corner, the game ended - with a second league clean sheet in as many games for Vale, as well as 3 points.

We thank our ultras for their support today (Jeeven, Miles & James), as we remain top of the table for another week.
