Sutton Albion 4-0 Vale County

Croygas Sports Club

18/11/18

'Turns out Graham was right...'

Vale produced a spirited performance in the Surrey Sunday Premier Cup but ultimately came up short in a result which was unfair on the team's performance. Going into the game as underdogs (massive underdogs according to some at the SSFL), Vale started brightly and dominated the opening proceedings. However we failed to make the most of this early pressure and did not take the chances on offer. Seconds before half-time the lads were punished for this, falling behind to a Given own goal which he was helpless with diverting anywhere else. Going into the second half uphill and into the wind was always going to be a tricky task, especially with a number of new faces making their debuts. Rowlands pulled off an acrobatic save to keep the difference at one, but minutes later was unable to pull off another one to save a debatable penalty given away by Moran. The boys just could not find the back of the net with the ball pin-balling in the box numerous times with chances cleared off the Sutton Line, but clearly it was not to be our day. With Vale throwing everything forward, two late goals, one which Strang in goal had no chance with saving and one which he had every chance of saving, gave Sutton a 4-0 win which in reality was a lot closer contest. Beer deserves a special mention for an outstanding game at the back, doing Beer Senior proud on the sideline. A result, but not performance, to forget.
