Vale's own Batman and Robin

There were flashbacks, dark flashbacks, when an old friend of the Vale, Matteo Milanesi was to be the ‘referee’ for today’s match. He arrived in the fashion only he can, gathering the Vale squad together pre-match before waffling on about various things, asking us not to ‘shout like it’s the fish market’. Remains to be seen whether or not any Vale players have indeed ever been to a fish market.

The pattern of the match was established very early on, as the large (slightly bobbly) pitch allowed players on both teams more time on the ball than usual. Chiswick were paying homage to Norwich City’s 2019/20 Premier League campaign — keeping the ball well in their defensive third and middle of the park, easy on the eye, but ultimately toothless. As such, Vale only pressed once the ball went into midfield, happy for the Chiswick defenders to maintain possession — and if a turnover was forced to hit them on the break.

Some early forays down the flanks saw a couple of balls into the Chiswick box without a clear chance being created — but a questionable penalty decision then went Vale’s way. Rowlands had carried the ball into the box, got to the by-line and then delivered a cross which hit the Chiswick player’s arm from 1-2 yards away. Hate to see it given against you, love it when it’s for the boys in blue. Slater stepped up, and cooly dispatched it down the middle of the goal (0-1).

The goal did little to change the flow of the game. Side to side Vale went, the warm up exercise coming into its own in such matches. A sea of blue and white crabs shuffled across the pitch time and again, blocking the Barnes thoroughfares as if inspired by the Evergreen. This was despite Matteo doing his best to disrupt the Pulis-like rhythm, handing out wrong decisions for throw-ins and free-kicks left, right and centre — although unlike our previous experience with him it was evenly distributed, leading to some unity on the pitch between the two teams.

Possession was well retained by Vale throughout the half, with some neat interplay working us up the pitch before playing one of Rowlands, Foley, Clements or Given in behind. Clear cut chances were at a premium following the goal, but a couple of half-chances were created towards the end of the half. First, Foley put Rowlands in down the left channel, and only a good save from the Chiswick keeper stopped it being two — and Slater fired over from the right side of the box following a quick counter.

A huge shift from everyone saw us go in one up at the break.

HT: 0-1

The real cycling GK showng his illegal support

In truth there’s not much of note to write about in this half, other than Vale’s disciplined shape preventing Chiswick’s danger men (72, 71) getting time and space on the ball. Guess this is why your Henry Winters, your Miguel Delaneys of this world get paid the big $$$.

Despite the lack of action, the cycling CM still found an opportunity for his customary Sunday diving antics, leaping off his saddle at the slightest of contact to his back wheel (probably more of a pen than the handball to be fair though). A couple of late free-kicks and a corner (which saw the towering keeper come up) from Chiswick increased the pressure, but Vale defended them well, and the game was up. Cheshire didn’t have a shot to save all game, in a much quieter outing than last Sunday’s encounter against Kew Antigua B.

A big upcoming week for VCFC sees a London Cup 3rd round game against Forza Greenwich on Thursday night channel 5, followed by an afternoon match against Sporting Crabs in the Marcus Lipton Cup on Sunday. Up the county.

FT: 0-1 (Slater, 17 p.k.)

Custom Kit man of the match: Slater
